The Anthem Guide to Competition!

Is this your first competition and you’re feeling a little nervous? Or maybe it’s not your first time, but you aren’t sure how to manage things going into this week?

Anthem and our amazing community has got you covered!

Stick to the Basics
It’s easy to get side tracked with optimizing and preparing for all the things, but it’s the basics that will actual have the biggest impact:
Prioritize Sleep: 8-10 hours!
Eat well: Fuel your body with good, whole foods!

How should I train this week if I’m competing?
1. Your training week should have a reduction in volume, but not necessarily intensity. We want to prime the system, but not over tax it. Consider doing a metcon with smaller more manageable reps/sets, so you can practice the speed and intensity you will experience at the Competition. For example, Mondays WOD, may scale the reps by 25%.
2. No max effort lifts this week! It’s a great time to still work on the movement, but keep it light (no more than 75%). Save your legs for Saturday! You’ll need them!!
3. Work on a skill! Still perfecting your rope climbs or toes to bar? Use this week to make those small final tweaks in your movement.
4. Consider a rest day on Friday!

Friday, ANTHEM POTLUCK & DYNAMIC DRIPS!
Still feeling nervous and unprepared? Book a session with Nicole Hohenwald to get a drip before heading into Saturday. She’ll be at Anthem from 3-7pm offering all the things to optimize your body for performance.
Needles aren’t your thing? That’s fine too! All Anthem members and family are invited to join us Friday night for a potluck from 5-7pm. Soak up the good vibes and good food before heading home for a good night’s rest!

Tips for the Day
1. Plan to arrive early, around 7am.
2. Bring food and beverages that you know you can tolerate under stress! Today is not the day to try new foods.
3. Something to sit on! Based on last year, that was fairly limited seating and you will want a way to rest between events.
4. Bring your recovery tools…Theraguns, lacrosse balls, foam rollers. Whatever you normally use on a day to day basis for mobility/recovery.
5. Make sure you have all your gear (knee sleeves, grips, etc.), wear layers, and bring a change of clothes or two. Better to be over prepared!
6. Support each other! We have 12 teams in this competition and most of our community is participating in their first ever comp!
7. Send it! Don’t get to the end of the day and have regrets about pushing harder. You’ll have time between events and none of the workouts are very long, so go for it! This is your time to leave everything you have on the competition floor!
8. At the end of the day, be happy with your effort! After all, it’s the only thing you can truly control.

I’m not Competing, can I still be involved in the day?
HECK, YES! We would love for you to join us on Friday night for the potluck and attend the competition to cheer on your Anthem crew. It means a lot to have familiar voices when you’re selling your soul on the bike.

This is going to be such a fun way to spend a Saturday together! Show up, go fast, lift heavy, don’t die! Easy 😉
