January Member Spotlight: Mike Vanhandel

What brought you to Anthem in the first place?
My wife, Emily, was already a member and I knew a number of other members there. Also, after a brief stint at a big box health club I had a desire to support local business by being a member at Anthem.

What was your first impression of CrossFit?
This is my jam! Loved the design of CrossFit–measuring and recording results along with friendly competition has helped me push harder than I have before.

How has your impression of CrossFit changed?
When I started, I used to do a lot of comparison amongst other gym members which never left me content with my progress. There will always be others that will lift more, run faster, etc. I’ve learned to be happy with my progress and celebrate my victories.

What was your first “bright spot” at Anthem?
It was during a front squat cycle. My nutrition was dialed in and I was consistently hitting PRs. It was validation that the programming and my hard work was paying off.

What are you working on now?
500 lb Deadlift, 1,000 lb Total
